2018 Gateball Competition

Our third annual gateball tournament took place on February 24th/25th. Lithgow Mayor, Stephen Lesslie, opened the tournament with the traditional shot through our 'ceremonial gate'.

Two years ago, as a thunderstorm raged around them, the Lithgow players were pondering suitable names for their team. Lightning was a natural choice and, as the number of players grew, teams Thunder and Storm joined the list.
So it is fitting that this year's competition should have gone out with a bang. Forecast storms circled around the town throughout Sunday but all games were completed – until the final was due to start!

It had been a great tournament until then. Seven teams took part; one each from Canberra and Newcastle, two from Epstars and three from Lithgow. We played a round robin on the Saturday With not enough time to play a second round robin we played a modified seeded double elimination knockout on Sunday

The round robin was very even, one team on 4 wins, 5 teams on 3 wins and one on 2 wins. The knockout provided some interesting games and finally the two finalists were decided – Canberra and Lithgow Lightning. But as we prepared for the final, thunder and lightning descended and a discussion took place between the two teams who agreed that the last game should be abandoned and a draw declared.
Pictured here are the members of the two winning teams, Canberra and Lithgow Lightning.

The Lithgow Mercury gave us fantastic coverage of the event, as you can see here.

Lithgow Ability Awards

We were so excited to learn recently that we had been nominated for an award in the Health and Wellbeing category of the Lithgow Ability Awards. This was to recognise our work with the special needs players who attend regularly from CAS Blackheath and LUSY Wallerawang.

While we didn't win the award, which was awarded (deservedly) to Ability Links, we were very happy to receive a certificate acknowledging our work. And we had a chance to meet other community groups in Lithgow and hear about the wonderful work that is being done in the area.

News From the Committee

The Lithgow Lightning gateball team returned home from the Australian Gateball Championships tired but very happy and inspired. While they didn't carry off the trophy, they had some good games and thoroughly enjoyed playing and watching some very skilled teams, including Korea and China. Korea beat China in the final and were considered very worthy winners.

Penny and John will be playing at the NSW State Gateball Championships in November. And the gateballers are gearing up for Lithgow's own gateball competition in February. Your help that weekend will be much appreciated (see page 2)

You will note that we have kept start times for croquet at 10.00 am. Local water restrictions mean we have to run the sprinklers early in the morning, resulting in very soggy grass. The gateballers have kept their 9.00 am start time - but they bring their own snorkels!

A first application of weedkiller helped the grass but a second application is needed. This was very hard work for just two people so we will be asking for help from others. Top dressing is also needed and a working bee will be held on the same day as the garage sale.
18th November is the day for our Annual Garage Sale, so turn out your cupboards, clean the garage or shed and see how much 'stuff' you can bring to our garage sale on 18th November. The only proviso we make is that you take home anything that isn't sold.

It's a fun day, wheeling and dealing with the customers, so please spare some time to come and help. Full details at the 11th November meeting.

Lithgow Gateball Competition - February 24th/25th

Even if you're not a gateball player, this is a great competition to watch, with teams coming from all over NSW and beyond.

It also makes money for the club! We would love to have your donations of cakes, fruit, etc which help to offset our costs. There will be a sign up sheet in the clubhouse.

And in the past we have had wonderful help from club members on the day, putting up shelters, setting out refreshments, topping up water containers, etc.

If you can spare a few hours, please sign up. Thank you in advance.

The folks from Community Access Service (CAS) in Blackheath have been playing with us for several years. We were really pleased to read in their recent Annual Report...

"Gateball (or croquet as the guys who attend refer to it) at Lithgow Croquet Club has been a much looked forward to activity where the group has progressed their gateball playing skills and interaction with the wider community."

News From the Committee

Our Annual General meeting was held in August. The club's bank balance is looking healthy and Cass's annual report showed how busy the club has been. Here's a brief rundown of events in 2016/17.
  • Annual garage sale in October boosted the club's bank balance.
  • The automatic watering system was installed in November.
  • A secondhand reel mower was purchased and a professional mowing man is now caring for our lawns.
  • Christmas. What a feast we had!
  • Australia Day - twilight play and barbecue. (We hope to repeat twilight play regularly during the summer.)
  • We started playing pairs for our weekly golf croquet competition.
  • The Gateball Comp in February was a great success, despite record temperatures. And the Lithgow Lightnings won!!!
  • We attended the Easter Family Festival at Portland
  • Fifth Saturday Fundays ensured rollicking good fun with the Pirates Game and much more.he local Uniting Care Group helped us celebrate World Croquet Day.hree triples teams visited Jamberoo for their annual comp and, yes, the Lithgow Lightnings won again.
The AGM also saw the election of the new committee which now comprises:

President - Cass Hawkins
Vice President - Maggi Williams
Treasurer - Bronwyn Thompson
Secretary - Alma Magus
And once again Val Lyons has kindly agreed to be the keeper of the club scrapbook.

Minutes of the AGM and monthly meeting are displayed on the club noticeboard. If you have any queries, do please ask one of the committee members.
Grant Applications
We're in the process of applying for some very exciting grants.
Lithgow City Council
We are seeking funding for a new roller door, a screen door to the clubhouse and some games equipment for our community groups and the 5th Saturday fun days.
Centennial Coal
Centennial Coal has always been very supportive of our club and this year we are asking them to consider the purchase of a large and sturdy marquee which can be used for competitions and special events.

Stronger Country Communities Fund
And our big ask this year is to apply for a grant from this Fund to help us extend and improve our lawns and increase the space available for members in our clubhouse.
Special thanks to Cindy for her sterling work in putting together a very professional grant application.
Go the Lithgow Lightnings

Very best wishes to our team which will be taking part in the Australian Gateball Championships in Bateau Bay from 13th to 15th October. Good luck Bronwyn, Cass, John, Noel, Penny and Robyn. And many apologies to Bron who is missing from the photo.
Lithgow - Style Capital!

Club members may hit the catwalks soon in our fabulous new uniforms. These shirts were initially designed for club members taking part in the Gateball National Championships in October, but the shirts are available for purchase by all club members if they wish. And matching jackets can also be ordered for those chillier playing days.

For more details of costs and how to order, have a word with Cass who has masterminded this project.

The logo was formerly used by Lithgow City Council but as it is now no longer used they have kindly given us permission to use it.
